Job Scope and Responsibilities:
The Mobile Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the on-site maintenance, repair, and servicing of diesel-powered vehicles within the S.B. Cox Ready Mix fleet, including mixer trucks, dump trucks, tanker trucks, and stone yard equipment, ensuring operational reliability and uptime to support concrete delivery operations. Under minimal supervision, this role involves traveling to various job sites or locations from a home base at the Gloucester plant to perform fleet maintenance, assist with plant operations, manage mobile shop tasks, and coordinate truck drivers assigned to maintenance projects.
Key Duties:

Mobile Maintenance and Repair:
-
Perform routine and preventative maintenance on diesel engines in mixer trucks, dump trucks, and tanker trucks at various locations, including oil changes, tire rotations, fluid checks, and component repairs (engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulic systems).

Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on-site using mobile diagnostic tools, micrometers, hoists, computer diagnostics software, and hands-on techniques, including welding, grinding, and polishing as needed.

Inspect and test-drive vehicles post-repair to ensure quality and operational standards are met, whether at a job site or plant location.

Maintain current knowledge of equipment specifications and service literature for fleet assets.

Operational Support:

Schedule timely mobile maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime, coordinating with drivers, dispatch, and operations managers to address equipment issues efficiently across multiple sites.

Operate a computer system (via mobile device) to maintain accurate records of repairs, parts usage, service history, and parts inventory for the fleet and individual trucks.

Coordinate parts orders and billing to ensure timely availability, transporting necessary tools and parts to job sites to reduce delivery truck downtime.

Drive commercial motor vehicles (mixer, dump, tanker trucks) as needed to support operations or relocate equipment for repairs.

Mobile Shop and Plant Management:

Maintain a safe, neat, and orderly mobile workspace (e.g., service truck or on-site setup), accounting for company-owned tools and enforcing safety policies (e.g., no-smoking policy) in the field.

Assist with plant and facility maintenance at various locations, including basic electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic troubleshooting.

Work in, on, and around commercial vehicles at job sites, including accessing concrete drum hatches for interior maintenance.

Collaboration and Supervision:

Act as a mobile liaison between drivers, Fleet Manager, Plant Manager, Shop Manager, Dispatchers, and company leadership (President, Vice President) to address business concerns and coordinate maintenance projects from the field.

Assign and supervise truck drivers on shop-related tasks at job sites, prioritizing repairs and maintaining fleet readiness.

Provide input on equipment conditions to support fleet management decisions, reporting findings from on-site assessments.

Compliance and Safety:
-
Adhere to company safety policies, health regulations, Federal Safety Regulations, and industry standards during all mobile maintenance and repair activities.

Keep mobile work areas clean, organized, and secure, managing exposure to oils, lubricants, and solvents in varying outdoor conditions.

Qualifications:
-
High school diploma or GED, plus additional education/training as a diesel mechanic.
-
Minimum 2-5 years of proven experience in mechanical repair and maintenance of heavy-duty diesel trucks, preferably in a mobile capacity.

Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical diagnostics, and related welding, grinding, and polishing skills.

Proficiency with mobile diagnostic equipment, hand/power tools, micrometers, hoists, and computer diagnostics software (accessible via mobile devices).

Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per Federal Safety Regulations; additional certifications are a plus

Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, use hoists for heavier items, climb ladders, and work in various conditions (on-site, outdoor exposure to weather).

Detail-oriented with strong analytical, problem-solving, and stress management skills to assess priority repairs in a fast-paced, mobile environment.

Good communication skills, a team-oriented mindset, and the ability to work cooperatively as a liaison between drivers, management, and customers from the field.

Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines, adapting to changing priorities and locations as business conditions warrant.
